So this is it! It’s the first day of class and you have one chance to make a great first impression! What can you do to show that you are an animated, dynamic and competent teacher?  Teach them something on the first day!  It is not necessary to start with page 1 of the book!  Start class by seeing how much previous knowledge Ss are bringing to this class.  For example, work with the vowels or the numbers 0 – 10.

Extension Activity for Basic Commands: TPR (Total Physical Response)

Practice different classroom instructions in a playful manner. Some actions are obvious: “Stand up. Sit down. Put up your hand.” Assign an action to other commands:

  • "Listen" → Ss put their hand to their ear.
  • "Work with a partner" → Ss should quickly grab 1 classmate.
  • "Work with a group" → Ss should quickly huddle in groups of 3 or 4.
  • "Be quiet!" → Ss put their finger to their lips.

On another day, use these commands to play 'Simon Says...' but change it! Ss should only perform the action if you say 'The teacher says...'.
